Creating the Thematic Legend

This section is valid for all product flavors.

Simple Thematic Map Designer lets you define and display thematic maps based on attribute data.

The Thematic legend option is available from the Map Content tab on the layer(s) context menu. The Thematic legend command from the context menu for a given layer opens the Thematic item dialog box.

The Thematic legend option can be defined for the layers of the Personal Storage Service (PSS) and Web Feature Service (WFS). To be able to define thematic legends for data served by WFS services the Geospatial Portal must be in version 16.00.0400 or newer.

This dialog box contains the following tabs:

• Unique value thematic
• Range thematic
• User defined

These tabs let you filter feature class objects using different criteria that you select from the Attribute for classification drop-down list.

To create a thematic legend entry:

1. Open the Thematic item dialog box for the desired layer.
2. Select an appropriate tab on the Thematic item dialog box.
3. Select an appropriate Attribute for classification.
4. Type values based on the chosen tab (Value/Begin, Value/End, Value/Expression) or use Autoclassify button.

   The Autoclassify option works only for data served by WFS service which must be in version 16.00.0400 or newer. You can use autoclassify option with both unique value and range thematic maps. This button is enabled when a numeric attribute has been selected. For any WFS prior or to EP04 and third party services the Autoclassify option is inactive.

   Autoclassify allows you to specify information about the classifications for a Range Thematic legend entry. You can select classification technique and set number of ranges.

• Classification technique – allows you to select one of the standard range methods:
  • Equal range: Divides the ranges up equally and distributes the values into each range. This is the default selection. Selection of this method enables the Begin Value and End Value text boxes. The ranges created will be limited within these values.
  • Equal count: Distributes the same number of records into each range.
  • Standard deviation: Computes the standard deviation of all values and applies it to the number of ranges.
• Number of ranges – allows you to type the number of ranges you want to use to create the thematic display. The default number of ranges is four, and the minimum number of ranges is two.

1. Type a Label for the thematic legend entry.The labels are created automatically if you use Autoclassify option.
2. Select a Style appropriate for the selected layer. The Assign colors field let you specify that the style colors of each classification will be automatically assigned. When selecting a color scheme, it is immediately applied to the styles in Style column in classification grid.

   The Assign colors feature is available for unique values, range thematic and user defined thematic map. It works with WFS and Personal services (PSS).

3. Optional: Specify the style for displaying the entire layer (labeled as Other values in the bottom part of the Thematic item window).

You must provide values in both fields (Label and Value) in order to create a thematic legend.

As a result, a new thematic legend is added for the selected layer, and a thematic map is displayed using the defined style.
